Central connections of the lingual-tonsillar branch of the glossopharyngeal nerve and the superior laryngeal nerve in lamb.

Afferent and efferent central connections of the lingual-tonsillar branch of the glossopharyngeal nerve (LT-IX) and the superior laryngeal nerve (SLN) in the lamb were traced with horseradish peroxidase (HRP) histochemistry. After entering the brainstem, most LT-IX and SLN afferent fibers turned caudally in the solitary tract (ST). Some afferent fibers of LT-IX terminated in the medial nucleus ...

Laryngeal granulomas associated with superior laryngeal nerve paresis.

The association between superior laryngeal nerve (SLN) paresis and laryngeal granuloma formation has not been described earlier. The aim of this study was to present a series of patients with isolated unilateral SLN paresis who developed contralateral vocal process granulomas. The study design was a retrospective chart review including all patients presenting to Indiana University from February...

Anaesthesia of the upper airway using topical anaesthetic and superior laryngeal nerve block.

Bilateral superior laryngeal nerve block was combined with topical application of local anaesthetic 140 times in 135 patients to anaesthetize the upper airway and facilitate tracheal intubation, laryngeal instrumentation, or to diminish the response to the endotracheal tube, in a patient already intubated. The technique was successful in 92% of attempts.

Superior laryngeal nerve identification and preservation in thyroidectomy.

BACKGROUND Injury to the external branch of the superior laryngeal nerve (EBSLN) can result in detrimental voice changes, the severity of which varies according to the voice demands of the patient. Variations in its anatomic patterns and in the rates of identification reported in the literature have discouraged thyroid surgeons from routine exploration and identification of this nerve. Inconsis...
